Last week we told you about an incident in New York involving unintended acceleration in a 2005 Toyota Prius. This accident occurred just after the high-profile case involving Jim Sikes and his runaway Prius in San Diego,
but unlike that incident where the car eventually came to a complete
stop, the New York Prius crashed into a stone wall with the driver
suffering minor, non-life threatening injuries.
Now, after a full investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration has ruled that this accident was likely caused by driver
error, rather than a faulty brake system. NHTSA delivered this message
to reporters:
"Information retrieved from the vehicle's onboard computer
systems indicated there was no application of the brakes and the
throttle was fully open."...

Utah
prosecutors allege Jeffrey Mowen ran a Ponzi-scheme and took over $10
million from investors. Those ill-gotten gains funded a 200-plus vehicle collection now heading to auction. These cars finally prove money, no matter how it's acquired, can't buy taste.
Mr. Mowen was captured in Panama last year and US Marshalls seized his
assets following the arrest. Those assets included over 200 cars
scattered all over the state of Utah. There are some real... umm... interesting... vehicles included.
OK, screw that, the cars are just gross. Sure, there's some very
nice vintage T-Birds and Panteras, but there's also a slew of vehicles
of very questionable taste. Take, for instance, the propeller-powered
trike, or perhaps a lifted Cadillac Escalade with an eye-watering paint
job, and of course...

The flipside of yesterday's 20 most expensive cars to insure in America list is today's Insure.com-provided list of the 20 least expensive cars to insure. Like saving money? Get ready to own a lame crossover or minivan.
Kim
Hazelbaker of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety sums it up
nicely: "The least expensive vehicles are ones you have to drive and no
one wants to." She isn't exaggerating — with the notable
exception of the Jeep Wrangler, no self-respecting enthusiast would be
caught dead in any of these. In fact, these cars are all so bad that,
if you really need to save money, we'd recommend walking over buying
one. The cash you'd pay for Kia Sportage would make for one really
kickass pair of sneakers...

When a world-championship racing team unveils a new supercar, some inevitable questions are bound to follow. In the case of the McLaren MP4-12C,
people want to know if the company plans on racing it. Seems like
logical enough a question, especially considering that McLaren's racing
experience extends beyond Formula One, most notably the 1995 24 Hours
of Le Mans where a McLaren F1 GTR pipped the prototypes to claim overall victory.
According to McLaren chief Ron Dennis, the company is not planning
their own racing campaign for the MP4. But having learned from the F1
project, which was never designed as a race car but was later adapted
to the purpose following demand from racing teams, Dennis suggested
that the company could offer and support competition spec versions of
the car for privateer entries...

General Motors
has given the green light to produce a new small sedan at its
Uzbekistan YoAJ joint-venture facility. The sedan, expected to be
slightly longer than the Spark pictured above, will be engineered in Brazil and sold in smaller, emerging markets.
The upcoming sedan is part of a family of GM products in a class that
the company refers to as global small vehicles for emerging markets.
The initial launch will include a sedan-only body, with the possibility
for a hatchback variant a couple years from now. Hatchback availability
will be determined by individual market demand...

Volkswagen
is currently preparing the next generation Beetle city car. It will be
previewed by a concept version in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show
with a production version to follow in 2011.
The 2012 Beetle will
be built on a new chassis with wider tracks and a longer wheelbase and
will feature MacPherson struts suspensions at the front and a torsion
beam at the rear. Engine line-up will include a 105bhp 1.2, a 160bhp
1.4 and a 210bhp 2.0 liter. The US market will also get a 170bhp
2.5-liter five-cylinder engine. Diesel line-up will include the new
105bhp 1.6 and a 140bhp 2.0 liter.
In an interview with AutoCar,
a Volkswagen insider said: "It is more contoured, with additional
structuring and defined feature lines used to help to break up the
simple surfacing and unadorned character of the current model...

Enjoy the largest
gathering of Stradales in one place -- ever! This is the Ferrari
Stradale which is an extension of the 360. The Stradale is a very rare
and raw street-legal race car. Less than 400 of them are scattered
throughout the U.S., and recently 21 of them got together in L.A.

Having been introduced in 2003, the Rolls-Royce Phantom
has been on the market for seven years now. That's a pretty long
life-cycle for a car these days. According to the ever-churning rumor
mill, that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg, as Rolls may be
planning on keeping the Phantom the way it is for another six years or
so.
According to the reports, the Phantom is set to receive a major
overhaul in 2016. What that will entail is far from being known at this
point. And considering Maybach may reportedly fall by the wayside, its only major competition is the Bentley Mulsanne, which is brand spankin' new.
Once the Phantom sedan is replaced, though, it would be reasonable to
expect the Coupe and DHC convertible to follow suit. In the meantime,
expect another few dozen special editions for the Persian Gulf crowd...

Riding
buses may be efficient, but Dutch students are building something they
call "The Superbus" to fix some of the minor problems like smell,
speed, and number of weirdos. It's an all-electric,
carbon-fiber-and-aluminum missile carrying 23-passengers in luxury at
130MPH.
Shades of "The Cyclops" from the movie The Big Bus
aside, the Superbus is a pretty interesting concept well along in the
development cycle. The concept behind the Superbus is to take the
crappy parts of bus travel out of the equation as a way to encourage
people to switch to buses rather than stay in cars. The Superbus does
this in a myriad ways, starting with the shape. Instead of a blocky
behemoth you have to climb up into, the Superbus uses a
low-to-the-ground chassis with sixteen independent gullwing doors,
making it convenient for everyone to get in and out of without hassle.
When they're on the bus, they'll be moving with some significant speed.
The big stinky diesel engine is gone, in its place is a block of
lithium-polymer batteries feeding a pair of electric motors running at
400 HP nominal and capable of 800 HP peak power...
