'09 Lexus IS-F Receives New Sports Shift Transmission |
The Lexus IS-F performance sedan will debut an advanced version of Lexus' eight-speed transmission - the Sports Direct Shift (SPDS). "The new Lexus IS-F would bring a completely new driving experience. It challenges the established view that performance vehicles need manual transmissions - not only is the transmission quicker at shifting gears, it offers a greater range of useable torque."
The SPDS transmission offers two shift settings: Seamless, or D-Range; and Direct, or M-Range.
In D mode, the IS-F offers smooth gear changes for suburban and city driving, with the vehicle making full use of the torque converter all the way through the gear range.
However, when M-Range or Direct is engaged, the IS-F takes on a totally different personality.
Shifting gears manually via steering wheel-mounted paddles or gear lever, the driver will be able to change gears in 0.1 seconds - a mere 0.05 seconds slower than gear changes in a Formula One car.
In M-Range, the IS-F will only utilise the torque converter from first to second. From there on the clutch locks up, allowing the IS-F to be taken all the way to its 6800rpm rev limit.
M-Range also automatically blips the throttle on the down change to match engine and gear speed in order to avoid sudden engine braking - an advantage during performance driving, on the track or on the road.
The transmission is also the same size as the six-speed it replaces.
Lexus Australia chief executive John Roca said that the IS-F would bring to the Lexus brand a completely new driving experience.
"The IS-F will deliver the most engaging and exciting driving experience of any Lexus," he said.
"The IS-F's transmission is a work of art. It challenges the established view that performance vehicles need manual transmissions - not only is the transmission quicker at shifting gears, it offers a greater range of useable torque.
"Interest in the IS-F has been overwhelming. The vehicle will not be launched in Australia until late this year, yet already we are holding serious orders," he said.
