Devon GTX Unveiled: 650-hp, $500K Viper

2010 Devon GTX

The 2010 Devon GTX, officially introduced at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, hopes to make a name for itself as a track star in addition to a lusted-after road-going exotic.  While the attempt at buying the Viper brand earlier this year failed, Los Angeles-based Devon Motorworks nonetheless decided to design and build their own American supercar, using the Viper’s chassis and powertrain as a starting point.

The GTX packs an 8.4-liter Viper V-10 engine, which cranks out 650 hp (50 more than the Dodge’s). The Viper’s six-speed manual is the sole transmission option—no fancy dual-clutch gearboxes here.  The carbon-fiber body, center-locking wheels, and carbon-fiber-reinforced racing seats affirm the GTX’s track-oriented intentions, which have been backed up by the production-car lap records the car has set at both Willow Springs Raceway and Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca earlier this year.

The GTX will go on sale in the first quarter of 2010, with production limited to 36 vehicles per year.  Pricing starts at $500,000 (roughly $410,000 more than a Viper), with a $25,000 Racing Package available.
